Figurative Ceramic Sculptures
Pamela Day Resume
My thoughts processes weave back and forth from 2 to 3 dimensions.  In both clay and paint I love to manipulate the surface of the medium for more depth of color, detail, and expression.  A study of people's faces and attitude helps me create my ceramic figurative sculptures.  Past designing the initial structure, I search first for the personal expression and soul for what their eyes will reveal, how it will interact with the viewer, or other characters they may be paired with.  Influences often come from Grimm and Aesop tales; crows and their expressions. I've returned to working with low- to mid-relief clay work, adding to the Grimm series. I created a series of heads that I call 'Sensate-creatures' that seem to come from deep in the wood as a Midsummer Night's Dream.  These heads began as a lesson/demo, teaching my students about eh Olmec Civilization and the many ton heads created as stylized-realistic portraits of their rulers. Although I painted with gouache in the past in a traditional design sense, I love the medium for consistent matte surface, still allowing beautiful depth of color and detail  My recent works experiment with movement, color, and juxtaposition, puzzling images that can relate or flow into or under one another to become a whole. Parts may appear 'collaged,' although they are not. My current influence is social/environmental issues, and nature. Wary of the Cassowary, my first of my new gouache works, grabbed me in my research by their expression, colorful heads that were so prehistoric in appearance. Is it Worth It  named partly by subject matter, and partly because I realized how tedious I am about painting, and I had chose to work larger than I had with ...Cassowary.  I loved the building up of the color's depth and the end result.  Climate Conference responds to the environmental concerns that are becoming more obvious in our world. Both my clay work and paintings are detail oriented, and I love working through the dimensions, intricacies, movement and color that are possible in either medium. I've also been particularly drawn to creating fabricated, painted environments for my clay work, which allows me to blend both worlds.
